kalisSouth Africa, Tuesday, December 31 – When the second test match of Sunfoil series started on December 26, it was not at all expected that India will be crushed so badly on the last match of this year. Indian squad kicked off well on the first day in Durban but got collapsed during the second day, succumbing to brilliant bowling of Dale Steyn, who received ‘Man of the Match award too on Monday.

In response to the score of 334 runs, South Africa showed a strong batting too and took a lead of 166 runs. Jacques Kallis who proclaimed his retirement from Test cricket hit a ‘farewell ton’, to sign off in style. Indian batting line up also couldn’t do much in the second innings. 25-year-old Ajinkya Rahane was the lone warrior who stood for long to stabilize the crumpling team India, but game was over as soon as he lost his wicket on 96 runs against a superb piece of bowing by V Philander.

Robin Peterson, Steyn, Morney Morkel, JP Duminy and du Plessis also imparted major role in clinching victory against India, which demolished both Australia and West Indies a couple of months ago. Partnership of South African skipper Graeme Smith (27 runs) and A Peterson (31 runs) was vital for the success story of the host on its own soil. In the true sense, the entire efforts by Proteas, whether by batting and bowling, were imperative to gift a suitable farewell to Kallis who has served cricket for 18 long years.

The player turned a bit nostalgic as soon as the time came closer to say bid adieu to his Test career. The crowd displayed beautiful messages on the banners to show their affection for 39-year-old cricketer. In the midst of emotional environment, the good news for Kallis’ fans was that he will continue to play in One Day International (ODI) and T-20 matches.

On the whole, the South Africa team ended 2013 with a win against India by 1-0, while Indian squad, which performed immaculately well throughout the year except ODI’s and Test series against Proteas, will have to gather its strength once more to register victories in the coming series of 2014 against New Zealand and other teams.
