India’s Splendid Victory in Inaugural Twenty20 Cricket Brings Good Memories Back

September 24 10:05 2015

t20New Delhi, Thursday, September 24 – Does time literally flies. Probably, yes! It seems as if it was yesterday when the Men in Blue lifted the World Cup trophy of the shortest format despite the fact is that it actually happened 8 years ago. In the jam-packed Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Indian cricket fans wished Mahendra Singh Dhoni to do the magic with his captaincy skills. And their prayers were answered.

The mega contest took place on September 24, 2007 between India and the arch-rivals Pakistan. Nothing could be better for the viewers of both teams to find India and Pak in the grand finale. Dhoni led the young squad to clinch the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup trophy in the inaugural year by thrashing the opponents by five runs.

Indian camp performed to the best of their abilities not just in the last blow, but also in all the matches they played in that tournament. Being a squad of Group E, challenges were huge for them since the format was new and none team knew how to play and what should be the strategies to be on the winning side. They even thrashed Pakistan in the bowl-out to qualify for the Super 8. India later on defeated England by 18 runs and South Africa by 37 runs. In spite of the fact that they lost at the hands of New Zealand by 10 runs, it did not make any difference for the reason that India were able to book a berth in further round thanks to higher net run rate as compared to the Kiwis and Proteas.

Indian team did not stop here. They also registered 15-run victory on the Aussies, a playing XI which stood out in most of the games played earlier, at Kingsmead, Durban in the knock out stage. The triumph was needed to enter into finale and give a tough competition to the contender. On the other hand, Pakistan logged 6-wicket win on New Zealand at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town to fight for the title. Nothing could have been anything perfect for India and Pak supporters to find their teams contesting for winner title. And whatever happened in the final show is a history. It is true whoever or whichever team does something amazing in the first season of something, it is remembered for several years.

In this year’s cricket carnival that started early this year, the major question in front of everyone was whether Indian cricketers will be able to add another splendid chapter to India’s amazing victories or not. This kept cricket experts busy for a while and the attitude was thanks to average performance of Indian cricket team in the matched held before 2015 World Cup. Despite housing the potential to standout amid others, their poor play in overseas pitch was a key concern. Tensions were increased as all matches were to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Regardless of having a long list of talented young and experienced cricketers, India lacked sharpness in bowling. But it was amazing to notice that they worked hard to make their weak point the strongest one and created huge difference during their stint. India’s 70 wickets in 7 games at World Cup 2015 prior to the semi-final against Australia made the audience witness something that was unexpected from them.

Even though pitch and weather conditions were different, India continued to cruise further. Undoubtedly, it was difficult for the participating squads to beat India in One-Day international matches. It was unfortunate that they lost a crucial match against Australian men but at the end, it is to be understood that winning and losing is the part of game. Reports about viewers breaking their TV sets caught the eyes. Expectations rose given that India won 2011 World Cup. Although Dhoni’s squad didn’t win against the Aussies but that did not mean they lacked behind in any aspect. It was just that the opponents were better than them. However, lessons are needed to be learnt from the past. They are soon to contest against South Africa. If top, middle and lower batting order of India stay strong and bowlers maintain their line and length then it wouldn’t be tough for them to be a tad up opposite to the challengers as it might seem in the first look.

Shikhar Dhawan may open innings of India. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s role to take team into a strong position will be of sheer importance. Other youngsters should not miss this chance to perform and go for confident biggies and shots. Proteas bowling attack is robust. If India are able to be solid against them, it would be tad easy for them to perform well in the entire scheduled matches of imminent tournament, which is to kick off after a week. It has been eight long years when the first T20 World Cup was brought home. With good memories of that event, hopes certainly go up from the capable Indian group. Let us wait and see how they progress in the upcoming series will is keenly been awaited by the cricket fans.
